Yesterday, during a check-in with one of my youngest team members at Fresh Daily, I asked if she was “happy working for the organization.” She replied that she was, and that Fresh Daily is where a Gen Z like her can thrive. Her choice of words made me pause because she used the word “thrive.”

I replied, “You are the next generation of the labor force. I find it strange why companies do not ever take your needs into consideration. I believe more companies should seriously think about it.”

The conversation made me happy because I have been explicitly designing the organization to be this way for quite some time. It was not by accident. It has always been my intention to create an organization where the latest generation of the workforce can contribute their unique perspectives, skills, and values effectively. Hearing her use the word “thrive” validated all these efforts.

Security and Flexibility

Gen Zs are often unfairly labeled as lazy, unmotivated, or difficult to work with, but these stereotypes couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, they are driven, innovative, and eager to contribute meaningfully to their workplaces. The key to harnessing their potential is to stop trying to make them fit into outdated ways of working. Instead, we need to embrace flexibility to accommodate their work-life balance needs. This includes allowing remote work options, flexible hours, and the autonomy to manage their tasks in a way that suits them best.

Threatening job loss or using fear as a motivator is counterproductive. Instead, creating a secure and supportive environment where they feel valued is crucial. Taking care of their mental health is also a top priority; we structure work to prevent burnout and promote well-being. Fostering a culture that prioritizes mental health should be the norm, ensuring that employees are happier and more productive.

Celebrating Individuality Bound by Shared Values

Most companies ask you to leave your shoes at the door, metaphorically requesting employees to conform and leave their unique traits behind. At Fresh Daily, we do the opposite. We encourage people to bring their full selves to work and contribute their individuality. We embrace the concept of “meraki,” which means to do something with soul, creativity, and love.
